What is Domain Name Registration?
Registering a domain name is the act of officially laying claim to a domain name like netgonian.com. Your name and contact information gets recorded in an official database and (for a small annual fee) you get declared the owner of that domain name.  There is an official coordinating entity known as ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) that is there to ensure that when you register a domain it becomes yours and nobody else can register that same name.
